Tim + Jenn | Dumbo Engagements

Tim and Jenn are what I call a counter cultural couple.  They are grounded in their vision for themselves + the world.  They are up to big things.  They're the type of couple that I proudly get to call friends + eagerly await to see what God has in store for their lives together.  During a break in the snow this week we ran around Dumbo to shoot their engagements.  We drank coffee, talked, laughed, and shared our dreams with each other.

I walked away from my time with them inspired and challenged.

Tim + Jenn thank you for sharing your souls + your story with me.  For the two of you there are endless possibilities.

Much love,

Lula Kate + Kate McDonald Bridal

1.LulaKate.KateMcdonald.Bridal.Wedding-16 The stars aligned last fall when Beth Chapman of The White Dress reached out to me to photograph a shoot she put together with Lula Kate bridesmaids + wedding gown designer Kate McDonald.  It turned out to be the All-American , preppy girl dream bridal shoot (and I was swooning every second of the day--Kate McDonald even hand painted this wedding gown!).  We had a team of amazing creatives to pull off this bride + bridesmaid shoot , and Connecticut was the perfect backdrop.

Style Me Pretty published the shoot on their site today.  Please venture over + share some love!

I cannot wait to work with these fabulous ladies again!

Style Me Pretty Feature | The Highline Hotel Radiant Orchid Wedding

Last December when my sweet from Emily + her husband Aaron were visiting from San Fran they stayed at this old seminary turned hotel in Chelsea.  I was instantly intrigued, and upon exploring the space with Em + taking our Christmas card pics there for our fashion blog I knew without a doubt that The Highline Hotel was a space I wanted to create in.  Fast forward a month and I began thinking of ways to mix my two passions:  fashion + wedding photography.  What better way to do both than incorporate Pantone's Color of the Year:  Radiant Orchid?

For the fashion forward bride who wants to incorporate pieces of Radiant Orchid my suggestion:  stay with classic silhouettes and add pops of color in your details.  From jewelry to nail polish to bouquets, to lavender mimosas there are a 1,000 different ways to incorporate orchid into your wedding.  If you're feeling a bit adventurous go bold like our bride + bridesmaids did!

This shoot took a village + I am beyond humbled and grateful at the amazingly creative + talented ladies that came together to make this shoot happen.  Thank you for helping to make this vision a reality + 100 times better than I could have ever hoped for!  If you don't know these fabulous people, get to know them!  And brides if you're still looking for NYC vendors…these are your gals!

Be sure + check out Style Me Pretty today for the full feature on this shoot!

The Refined Woman | Dara

There's no better way to kick of my first post of The Refined Woman, than with the lovely NYC Photographer Miss Dara...

  • Why did you choose this outfit? I love this particular pairing of pieces because it allows me to be me, while still looking like a professional (and a girl).
  • Was it a success or failure?  Why? This outfit has been a total success for me this year.  I have even paired this skirt with various tops and it works every time. I love the double-serge cotton fabric that J.Crew uses for these pencil skirts (I have a few other solid colors that I LOVE). The stretch of the fabric and fit of the skirt makes it so easy to run around in and squat and get every angle I need on the wedding day. And this print camouflages everything, so I never have to stress about whether or not I have dirt on me. The cotton/lenin blend button down is perfect for summer weddings because it's loose, breathes well, and is just plain comfy. And due to the nature of the fabric, no need to worry with ironing. The wrinkles and rolled sleeves totally work in its favor. The only downfall with this top is it will show EVERY drop of perspiration! But unless you wear white, black, or navy, that's pretty hard to disguise. Add a basic leather belt and P&O bowtie and you're good to go!
  • Can you list the brands of all the major/key pieces from the look?  Skirt: J.Crew    Top: Uniqlo   Bowtie: Preston&Olivia  Wedges: Gianni Bini

I myself am a total fan of the JCrew Pencil skirt, and love this look!  What do y'all think?

The Refined Woman | The Ladies

  • If you could describe your style in 5 words what would it be? That would depend on the day. I feel like my style is all over the place because I wake up each day and decide who I want to be. But if I were to look at my wardrobe, I would say my pieces as a whole are: Classic, tailored, fashionable, downtown, girl-meets-boy (the hyphens make it one word :) )
  • If you had no budget what 3 places would you shop at. My three B's: Barney's, Bergdorfs, Billy Reid
  • Let's be real, wer'e all on a budget...where do you really shop at?  Zara, J. Crew, ASOS
  • What draws you into the art of photography?  I love history and photography allows you to document history by capturing a moment in time and keeping it forever.  I love wedding photography because it enables me to document a very special day in the life of couples so in love, that they've decided to commit their lives to one another, and I don't think there's anything more beautiful to capture than love.

  • If you could describe your style in 5 words what would it be? Subtlety masculine, contemporary, clean, and modern boheme.
  • If you had no budget what 3 places would you shop at.  Anaise, Philip Lim, Lauren Moffatts.
  • Let's be real, wer'e all on a budget...where do you really shop at?  The clearance rack at zara, sales at nordstroms rack, tjmaxx contemporary section, my favorite amvets thrift store in san diego + estate sales.
  • What draws you into the art of photography?  The relationships and spaces i can create; it’s a powerful thing to photograph someone, to create a space in which they feel empowered to just "do them", to be free and own who they are in front of my camera. When they do, the creative process moves from a one sided ‘ im photographing them’ to, they are being photographed and creating art with me.

  • If you could describe your style in 5 words what would it be? Classic, relaxed, comfortable, colorful, feminine
  • If you had no budget what 3 places would you shop at?  Anthropologie, JCrew, Madewell.
  • Let's be real, wer'e all on a budget...where do you really shop at?  Target, JCrew Factory, H&M
  • What draws you into the art of photography?  Being a creative is a hard thing to categorize and compartmentalize.  I love art because I love color, movement, and things that are full of life.  Photography gives me the opportunity to harness my art and translate that color and life and movement into something that is forever.

  • If you could describe your style in 5 words what would it be?  Classy, prep with a hint of bohemian, tailored, diverse (before I buy an item I go through in my head how many different ways/outfits I could wear it with).
  • If you had no budget what 3 places would you shop at?  Club Monaco, Marc Jacobs, JCrew.
  • Let's be real, wer'e all on a budget...where do you really shop at?  Zara, JCrew and Anthropologie sales racks.
  • What draws you into the art of photography?  Ever since I was little images moved me.  There’s something so powerful about capturing a real moment.  What keeps me falling deeper and deeper in love with photography is the art of capturing real life moments between people, whether it be a quiet moment in between actions, a burst of laughter, or the movement of a tendril of hair when a slight breeze passes by...I love everything about it.

  • If you could describe your style in 5 words what would it be?  Simple. Classic. Colorful. Bold. Polished.
  • If you had no budget what 3 places would you shop at?  Marc Jacobs.  Celine.  Chloe.
  • Let's be real, wer'e all on a budget...where do you really shop at?  JCrew, Nordstrom, Madewell, Urban Outfitters, and Thrift Stores.
  • What draws you into the art of photography?  I love being able to capture beauty in the everyday and ordinary moments. I am drawn to emotions and colors and being able to hold onto the good things to savor later.

  • If you could describe your style in 5 words what would it be?  Minimal and classic but a touch unrefined, with a little bit of androgyny...I don't have a fifth, remember, I'm a minimalists :)
  • If you had no budget what 3 places would you shop at?   I have to only pick THREE?! Alright...Ralph Lauren for the classics (I miss my discount), Alexander McQueen for the edge and Valentino, well, because every girl needs one Valentino...
  • Let's be real, wer'e all on a budget...where do you really shop at?  I will always stand by the argument for "quality vs. quantity". It doesn't mean it has to be designer...just made well! So I save up and invest in classic pieces that will last a lifetime. The kind you can pass to your kids. But in between the investment pieces....Allsaints, Gap for the basics, My husband's closet.
  • What draws you into the art of photography?  Simple...the lives that are behind the pictures that we make.

San Diego Wedding | Mara and Kyle

Before you begin going through this post, please play this song and listen throughout. There was a quiet beauty about Mara and Kyle's wedding.  A peaceful atmosphere that seemed to permeate throughout all the tiny details of the day.  Quiet giggles of bridesmaids, groomsmen...well boys just being boys, and Mara and Kyle soaking it all up. Their San Diego wedding at L'Auberge was simple, soft, romantic, and full of moment upon moment of lasting memories made between Mara and Kyle; it was a joy to shoot.

Thanks Aaron Shintaku for letting me shoot this fabulous wedding with you!  Check out his from the day images HERE.
